Why building an email list is the smartest move for your service business
Building your email list is the smartest move you'll make this year. And once you start don't stop.
How often have you heard someone, usually an email marketer, say that "the money is in the list."? It’s cliche and makes me cringe a little. I think it's more applicable to ecommerce. B2B email and coaching emails are a little harder to track and can be a slower burn. I prefer to say "your email marketing is a permission-based sanctuary for the person who is interested in what you offer but needs a good reason to trust you"
Email marketing is worth it. Building your email list is still worth the effort. Sure I’m biased but I’d like the chance to back that up. You might think email, ugh sending emails is hard work and it’s transactional. I disagree. It’s not easy or transactional.
Side note: Transactional emails are a thing. But they’re the order confirmation, appointment reminders and other emails designed to deliver a product or service.
Constantly pitching your services doesn’t feel good to empaths, health professionals and purpose-led businesses. You don't need to sell in every email if you don't want to. I don't. Some do. But they're usually direct-response copywriters. When a business owner sells in every email without the marketing psychology that a conversion copywriter has it may not be as convincing as you hope. But you do you.
Your emails also aren't also not just ‘giving value’ either. You're focusing on helping people take the next step towards fixing the problems that brought them to you. That includes offering them your services. It’s in the delivery and strategy.
Your email list is a business asset that builds trust and is well worth your time and energy.
The social media gamble
Social media is great. We are lucky to have a way to reach people for free. Businesses and their marketers used to have to pay thousands of dollars for advertising to reach people. Now we have a way to attract people using inbound marketing and social media.
But, and this is a big ‘BUT’, there are challenges with social media that I think many of us are feeling right now.
- Burnout for creators (feeling this myself)
- Trolls and keyboard warriors
- The 24/7 accessibility and triggering notifications AND
- You can lose access
Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, or Facebook are excellent for discovering potential clients. But relying on them as your only way to generate leads, and stay in contact with them, is a big risk.
Algorithms change without warning, reach can plummet overnight, and you can’t guarantee you’ll be able to find them again. If you lost access to your main social media platform tomorrow, would you have a way to reach the people who need your help?
Moving your audience from a social feed to an email list ensures that you control when and how you communicate. Not a tech giant.
I’m not going to be a tool and harp on about this. But it’s worth mentioning. Because I know quite a few small business owners who have been caught short by losing access to their Instagram account. Fortunately some got access back.
The impact of direct connection
For professional service providers, and coaches, your newsletters can be like a digital coffee date. Hanging on social media can feel like a crowded room where everyone is shouting for attention. As an introvert I prefer the inbox. It’s not totally quiet. But it’s a private space where you get to control who you invite in. Mostly. The spammers just end up in junk next to the ‘quick question’ emails.
When someone trusts you enough to give you their email address, that’s an invitation. It’s a micro-conversion in itself. You can share the stories and insights that help your audience move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling in flow. It’s a safe space where those crucial shifts in perspective can build over time as your readers start to see themselves in the transformation you describe.
That invitation has a huge condition on it. If you abuse their trust they’re gone.
Moving beyond surface-level advice
The goal of a healthy email list isn't just to broadcast tips or basic health and business advice. Most people can find "how-to" content with a quick search. And now their favourite AI can give them all the information they could possibly want. Whether it’s reliable or not is another matter but still... Your email list offers a precious opportunity to connect with the deep desires and inner conflicts of your ideal clients.
For example, say your a health coach that helps New Zealand women navigate burnout. Through consistent, thoughtful emails, you can address the nuance of what it means to break free from survival mode or lead a more intentional life. You can share stories to show that you understand their specific experience and how you’ve helped others.
Your most valuable asset AND a valuable community
By making list building a priority for your business or practice, you are investing in a sustainable system that grows with you. With email sequences, triggered by their interactions with your emails and landing pages, you can nurture leads at their own pace and provide value long before a coaching offer is ever made.
Your email list is an asset. But that doesn’t mean it’s a ‘thing’. Please don’t view your email list as a pitch list or ‘database’. If you treat your list as a collection of data points rather than a community of people you can help, you risk creating the kind of emails people avoid. Instead, create a marketing foundation that feels human, warm, and incredibly effective.
